Net Detective is one of the most recognizable names in private investigation software on the web today. With its
near ten year history of success, it has become the most widely used "spy software" program in the world.
But can it do all the things it claims it can? Our editors set out to find out just that. So let's get on with it!
Features:
Net Detective’s features performed all the basic functions we needed to perform our test investigations, including some detailed functions we found to be useful for more in-depth searches. Some of these included: (The list below is NOT a full listing of Net Detective’s features - Ed.)
- Background Search Wizard - From here we were able to find information for our test investigations such as personal information verification, lawsuit histories, criminal histories, educational background, professional history, asset holdings, military history, lifestyle and medical records, and business background on our target subjects.
- People Search Wizard - Functions include nearly every variable imaginable to locate a person when limited information is known about that person. Includes search by name, phone number, address, business, email address, map locator, and more. Net Detective even maintains a database of celebrity addresses to search from. We were able to locate information on 9 out of the 10 individuals we chose to target as part of our review.
- Invisible Web - The Invisible Web, or the Deep Web, is the vast hidden store of searchable databases that are publicly accessible, but not indexed by major search engines for technical reasons. Net Detective provides tutorials and resources to gain access to the Invisible Web and obtain information from resources not found through conventional search methods. These proved to be invaluable in completing our test investigations.
The system also contains a sections on downloads, containing programs and reports useful to conducting investigations, none of which we used during our test investigations in this review.

Ease of Use:
The web page style navigation interface of Net Detective was intuitive, but not perfect. We were able to jump to all of the system’s main functions with relative ease, but found the use of the 'Back' button to be annoying.
When navigating Net Detective, the user selects his choice from the left hand side navigation buttons. As each section is entered, the navigation changes to highlight more detailed options for that section. The 'annoying' part we found was that when you used your browser’s ‘back’ button, the navigation did not revert to the navigation scheme from the previous page. Instead, the user is forced to use the graphic ‘back’ button on each page if the navigation scheme is to stay consistent on the appropriate pages.
This wasn’t anything that hampered our ability to use the system, mind you, it just proved to be a minor annoyance.
Graphical navigation aside, Net Detective places all the major functions up-front and center.
Background checks, people searches, and unclaimed money search wizards are available from the moment you log in, right from the first page. These functions can literally be started in seconds - living up to exactly what Net Detective advertisements claim, as we found.

Updates:
Net Detective is updated frequently to keep even the most tenacious investigators happy. Most search databases were updated monthly during our review period, giving us fresh data to scour through for our test investigations.
We were able to come up with completely new information month-to-month in some cases, which was extremely helpful with some cases that seemed to 'dead-end' after a few days.
This being the case, Net Detective proved itself as an excellent resource to return to again and again to find new information, instead of just simply ending an investigation after a few days. As the internet grows, so does the reach of Net Detective - what you can’t find with it today, just might be there tomorrow, as our editors found out. (In other words, just because you don’t find it today, doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t find it with Net Detective. Keep working with it, and eventually you will get the results you’re looking for.)

Support:
Net Detective customer support answered all of our inquiries promptly and clearly. From questions about how to perform certain functions with the software, to even requesting a refund (which many companies are notorious for ignoring!), Net Detective customer support was excellent.
In the case of functionality, we sent an email outlining a background check we wanted to perform. The reply we received gave us a step-by-step process on how to use the system most effectively, and we were able to complete the task with ease. Actually, the response email gave us tips on how to use the system that we were not even aware of, which made our search using Net Detective even more effective (Outstanding).
In the case of the ‘refund’ we were asking about - we were treated courteously, and promptly - no questions asked. (Superb in a situation which most companies don’t handle very well in today’s market!)

Overall:
In conclusion, Net Detective is the top rated system year after year for a reason...it simply out-performs the other systems on the market.
With its in-depth features, frequent database updates, and excellent customer service, we found Net Detective to be an excellent value at just $29.00, and recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive alternative to hiring a professional agency. The results we were able to achieve were on par with those that we would have received from a professional agency at several times the price.
